The Return

One of the great strains on the already strained health systems in sub-Saharan Africa is 'brain drain'. Brain Drain- the exodus of the most talented and educated from poor countries- is a relentless force. It bleeds parts of the world like Africa that can least afford it. While development money is pouring in, those most able to ensure sustainable development pour out. Poverty, poor working conditions- the reasons people leave- are understood. Why people stay- or come back- is more of a mystery. The main characters in our film in production have all returned to Africa- some after living and working overseas, others from near-death after struggling with AIDS. But they have all come back. Our film seeks to find out how the tide of brain drain can be reversed. Understanding this story of why people stay and how they have created a remarkable health system offers creative possibilities to improving the lot of millions.
